1. What is HEGlobal?

HEGlobal has been established to act as a gateway to information sources, advice and guidance on all elements of transnational education (TNE) from finance through to in-country market intelligence and on-the-ground expertise. There is a substantial amount of support and expertise available to the sector already. HEGlobal has been designed to bring together information on all sources of available support in one place, thereby raising sector awareness, as well as signposting individual institutions to sources of further assistance on a range of relevant topics including finance, strategy, legal and quality insurance.

HEGlobal consists of a website which documents the services and information available to the sector on TNE, as well as a telephone helpline and email inquiry function.

It is not a centralised repository for all research and data on TNE, but instead brings together a range of sector stakeholders providing support to higher education institutions in developing their TNE activities. HEGlobal is a sector-led initiative and one of its greatest strengths is its intelligence-gathering function. By providing a mechanism for the sector to highlight existing needs, HEGlobal will facilitate the development of additional resources for the higher education sector to complement and enhance those already available.

HEGlobal also offers institutions in countries outside of the UK the opportunity to express an interest in developing partnerships with UK institutions. See the opportunity pages for more.

2. Which organisations offer support to institutions that are seeking to develop their TNE activities and what services do they provide?

HEGlobal is an initiative bringing together the existing expertise and resources of a wide range of project partners, as follows:

  • Universities UK (UUK)
  • UK HE International Unit (IU)
  • UK Trade & Investment (UKTI)
  • UK Export Finance (UKEF)
  • British Council (BC)
  • Quality Assurance Agency (QAA)
  • Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)
  • Science and Innovation Network (SIN)
  • Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
  • Research Councils UK (RCUK)
  • The Training Gateway

Information about each of the HEGlobal partners and the support they offer institutions to help them maximise their TNE potential, can be found by visiting the HEGlobal partners pages.

3. I am looking to develop transnational education (TNE) activities and have a specific country in mind. How can HEGlobal assist me?

HEGlobal contains a range of information on specific countries which can be accessed in the country profiles section. The amount of information available will vary country by country.

The services section of the website also contains advice on how additional information on specific countries can be accessed from a range of partner organisations such as the British Council (BC), Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and Science and Innovation Network (SIN). Further sources of information are available under services and offer advice on how institutions can access additional research reports, data and journal articles on specific countries and TNE-related topics.

HEGlobal is not designed to be a repository of all available information on every country but instead provides links to an extensive range of available information and support. In doing so, HEGlobal will enable institutions to effectively investigate opportunities in specific regions, gain a better understanding of the viability of transnational education activities in particular locations and make well-informed decisions on how best to develop their TNE activities in future.

HEGlobal has been designed to respond to the needs of the higher education sector in expanding existing TNE activities. Whilst TNE activities are growing rapidly, there remain a number of countries where little or no TNE activity has taken place to date or where there is limited data and research available.

HEGlobal will play a vital role in addressing gaps in information and support. If you require support and advice on a particular country and you are unable to find what you are looking for, please contact us.

4. I cannot find information on a particular country. Can HEGlobal still assist me?

HEGlobal has been designed to respond to the needs of the higher education sector in expanding existing transnational education (TNE) activities. Whilst TNE activities are growing rapidly, there remain a number of countries where little or no TNE activity has taken place to date or where there is limited data and research available.

HEGlobal will play a vital role in addressing gaps in information and support. If you require support and advice on a particular country or obstacle you are encountering, and you are unable to find relevant assistance, please contact us.

By gathering feedback and input from across the sector, HEGlobal will play a central role in identifying priority issues where additional resources are needed by the sector to support TNE activities. HEGlobal will liaise with all partner organisations to focus attention on existing barriers to TNE and make the case for the development of additional resources to complement those already available to the sector.

5. How do I feedback to HEGlobal on information and support I feel is lacking?

In order to feedback to HEGlobal on how existing services and resources can be improved to help the higher education sector more effectively engage in transnational education activities, please contact us and, if you have time, please complete our online survey.
